Low phosphorus foods: 155 foods ranked by phosphorus per serving

Phosphorus is different from potassium: there is no published per-serving line to apply. So this page does not split foods into "low" and "high". It ranks 155 common foods from the least to the most USDA phosphorus per standard serving and shows the number, the serving and the source.

Why there is no cutoff on this page

The National Kidney Foundation's Phosphorus and Your CKD Diet (updated July 16, 2024) gives no numeric daily milligram target and no per-serving low or high threshold for phosphorus. We do not invent one. A rank shows order, not safety.

Additives and absorption

The "Packaged?" column flags 58 foods that are usually sold processed or packaged, such as cheese, deli meat, bread and snacks. For those, the label of the product you actually buy matters more than a generic USDA value, because additive phosphorus may not be reflected in it.

Phosphorus per standard serving, lowest first

Foods at the top are often small servings, fats, sweeteners or drinks, so a low number can reflect the size of the serving rather than the food. Hide servings under 28 g with the filter, or compare the per 100 g column.

Phosphorus per standard serving, 155 foods ranked lowest firstRank follows the unrounded USDA-derived value, ties by name. No official cutoff is applied.

How we calculated this

phosphorus per 100 g x serving grams / 100, rounded to the nearest milligram for display. Per 100 g values come from Foundation Foods 2026-04-30 and SR Legacy 2018-04. Each row's FDC id links to the USDA record. Potassium is shown alongside so you can see both numbers for the same serving. Details and checksums: sources. KDOQI reference: Ikizler TA et al. Frequently asked questions

What is a low phosphorus food?

There is no official per-serving cutoff to quote. The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) page on phosphorus gives no numeric daily milligram target and no per-serving low or high threshold, so this page ranks foods by USDA phosphorus per standard serving and does not label any food low or high.

Does phosphorus from additives count differently?

According to NKF, phosphorus from food additives is completely absorbed, and phosphorus in animal foods is absorbed more easily than phosphorus in plant foods. The KDOQI 2020 guideline (statement 6.3.2) says to consider the bioavailability of phosphorus sources. USDA reference values for a generic food may not show additive phosphorus in a specific product.

How can I spot phosphorus additives in a product?

NKF advises checking ingredient lists for additives with "phos" in the name. Ask your dietitian how to handle a specific product.

What is a normal blood phosphorus level?

NKF gives the normal range for blood phosphorus as 2.5 to 4.5 mg/dL. KDOQI statement 6.3.1 adjusts phosphorus intake to keep serum phosphate in the normal range. Your own target and any food limit come from your care team and lab results.

Track your own numbers against your own limits

Renal Diet adds up potassium, phosphorus, sodium, protein and fluid from an offline USDA food database, with the source on every value. No account, no scanner. You enter the limits your care team gave you, and "Can I eat this?" shows a traffic light against what is left today. A PDF report is there for your dietitian. Free to start; some features may need an optional premium subscription.

Values are USDA reference values for a standard serving. Your limits are set by your nephrologist or dietitian. Processed foods and phosphorus additives may differ. This is not medical advice.
